The gold standard for the diagnosis of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure is an arterial pO2 on room air less than 60 mmHg measured by arterial blood gases (ABG). In the absence of an ABG, SpO2 less than 91% measured by pulse oximetry on room air can serve as a substitute for the pO2 because SpO2 of 91% equals pO2 of 60 mmHg.

What is your diagnosis? Case discussion. The patient is suffering from metabolic acidosis as evident from the low pH and low bicarbonate levels. Low p CO2 and high p O2 signify that the patient is in a state of respiratory compensation. Acid-base imbalances are an important concept of nursing practice, not to mention something you’ll need to learn in school.

Therefore, patients with PCP infection, regardless of their pO2 level on presentation may benefit from corticosteroid therapy. The current standard of care therapy for patients with PCP does not involve the addition of corticosteroids to standard antibiotics in those patients with pO2>70 mmHG.

The oxygen partial pressure (pO2) in the arterial blood is between 70–100 mmHg , in the venous blood around 40 mmHg, in the aortic media between 30–40  pO2 (partial pressure of oxygen); CO2 (carbon dioxide content); Base excess (the loss of buffer base to neutralize acid). And may include: Oxygen saturation. Aliquots of 20 venous samples were adjusted to the following pO2 values: <45, ~ 70, and ≥150 mmHg. For each system, five consecutive measurements on each   concentrations above 40% are often required to raise the capillary Po2 of hypoxic infants above 70 mmHg.

23 Jan 2006 The 70-70 rule in respiratory care basically states that when individuals are 70 years old, their normal PaO2 should be about 70 mmHg.

At a PO2 of 70 mm Hg and normal temperature and pH, hemoglobin is _____% saturated with oxygen. A) 75 B) 50 C) 10 D) over 90 E) 25 D) over 90 13 ABG on room air shows pH 7.40, pCO2 52 mmHg, and pO2 70 mmHg; bicarbonate level on BMP is elevated at 42. This is classic chronic respiratory failure: normal pH, elevated pCO2 and bicarbonate, with hypoxemia—but no acute criteria. This might be better understood by measuring a patient's venous blood gas. In room air, a normal arterial pO2 would be 100 mmHg, and the venous pO2 would be about 75 mmHg. However, if a patient had a very low cardiac output, the arterial pO2 might still be 100 mmHg, but the venous pO2 might be 50 mmHg.
